Green Bridge to Close for Five Days Starting Monday
MONTAGUE — The Fifth Street Bridge, known locally as the Green Bridge, will close to all traffic for five days starting Monday for state inspections and repairs, forcing commuters onto a detour as Montague also gears up for an Oct. 6 special election on two regional proposals.
TOWN HALL The Green Bridge closes starting Monday at 5 a.m. as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation inspects and repairs the span linking Turners Falls to the rest of Montague. The closure runs through the evening of Friday, Sept. 25, with the regular detour route sending traffic across the Gill-Montague bridge to Route 2.
The town is also holding voter information sessions ahead of an Oct. 6 special election covering two ballot questions: a proposed Franklin County Technical School building project and a proposed Great River Regional School District. Separately, Montague's Board of Health is partnering with the Valley Health Regional Collaborative and Walgreens on flu, COVID and pneumonia vaccine clinics for the 2026-27 season.
SCHOOLS Ahead of the October special election, the town has scheduled an information session on the proposed Great River Regional School District for Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Turners Falls High School Auditorium at 222 Turnpike Road. The session, posted to the Selectboard's calendar, gives residents a chance to hear details on the regionalization proposal before it goes to voters.
COMMUNITY & ARTS The Montague Public Libraries are featuring a new exhibit, "Pioneer Protests," at the Montague Center branch, showcasing work from local photographers Jon-Marc Seimon and John Rae. The libraries are also collecting costume donations for their annual costume swap party and have booked local author Lee Wicks for a Local Author Series stop on Sept. 30 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to discuss her new memoir, "A Five Dog Marriage."
COMING UP The Montague Selectboard meets via Zoom Monday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m., with its agenda and materials posted online. The Carnegie Public Library's Afternoon Classics Book Club discusses Steinbeck's "The Pearl" that same day from 4 to 5 p.m. The libraries' Good Neighbor Day: Montague Community Fair runs Saturday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 5 p.m.
